Survival Guide: Top 10 Tips For Travelling To Malaysia
1. Learn the local language
Not all locals speak the same language as travellers from around the world. Although most of them speak in English. In rural areas, locals can say simple phrases like ‘How are you?’ and ‘Thank you’. To communicate better with them, try to learn to say basic words in Malay, Chinese, and Tamil. You could also use body language (and a smile) so they understand what you are trying to say. They will appreciate that you did your best to talk to them. Some of them might become your friends and would be willing to share their stories with you.
2. Join local communities before arriving
There are many travel enthusiasts and locals who share their love for Malaysian culture through events and programmes. We recommend looking at hostels that organise special programmes such as food tours, city tours, hiking, night life, and many other fun activities. Couchsurfing is also another great option to befriend locals to show you around and experience great fun, Malaysian style. If you are into arts and culture, we recommend engaging on the social media pages of local art markets and galleries such as Riuh in The City, Zhongshan Building, The Bee and Publika.
3. Know duty-free rules
Malaysia is serious about duty-free concession. There is a limit for buying certain items. Wine, spirits or malt liquor cannot exceed one litre per person. While only 200 cigarettes can be brought into Malaysia. Perfumes and cosmetics cannot cost more than RM200 (USD50). Travellers are required to go to the Red Lane to declare their goods. If they have nothing to declare, they can move on to the Green Lane.

4. No drugs allowed
Taking drugs into Malaysia is a serious offence, regardless of quantity. The punishment for these cases will be high fines and jail time. Before travelling, make sure to double check your luggage and bags to be sure there are no questionable substances that may appear among your belongings.
5. Be adventurous in trying hawker stalls
Hawker stalls can look hot and stuffy due to thick crowds, but the local delicacies may just be worth it. Authentic local food is prepared and cooked at stalls before serving. Try as many local dishes as you want because these are more affordable than fancy restaurants. A single dish costs about RM7 – 10 (around USD1 – 2). You can even order huge dishes to share with your friends, which are even cheaper. Most of the hawker stalls are kept clean so you can enjoy your meal at the tables or along the streets.
Malaysia offers lovely tropical weather, with temperatures roughly between 28 – 31ºC. The weather can be extremely hot on certain days, though, and more humid on rainy and sunny days. Have back-up plans to enjoy indoor activities to avoid sweating under the sun or getting soaked from the rain. Spend your time in malls, browsing through the stores and enjoying your meals at lovely cafes. Be sure to put on some sun screen and drink plenty of water as well.
7. Avoid the haze
The severity of haze in Malaysia changes on a yearly basis. In 2015, alongside Singapore and Thailand, Malaysia suffered a month-long haze due to mass illegal burning of forests in Indonesia. Last year, the haze blanketed Malaysian skies for a few days. It is advisable to monitor the conditions before travelling.
Public transport has become more convenient for visitors travelling around Malaysia. There are many lines – including the LRT, MRT and Monorail – to be used to go out and about in Kuala Lumpur. Also, you can still hop onto buses to get to your destinations. Charging by the distance starts at 80 cents. In other states of Malaysia like Penang, Melaka and Ipoh, you can move around via public buses. To save on travelling costs, it would be best to walk around. Although you might want to avoid walking in the afternoons to prevent heat strokes. Map out public transportation routes to your destination before heading out.
There is no tipping in Malaysia. Many cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars charge a 10% service charge and 6% Goods and Services Tax on top of your bill. These are mentioned on the menu. You cannot give extra tips to taxi drivers and hotels as you only need to pay the exact amount. If they provide you great service, ask them before giving tips.
10. Prepare equipment for hiking in rainforests and mountains
Malaysia has plenty of stunning tropical rainforests and mountains. Appropriate clothing is recommended in order to enjoy your adventures here. Wear comfortable sports or hiking shoes. Take insect repellent with you and bring some healthy snacks in case you get hungry along the way. Most importantly, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

At 6741 meters from the tips, the TPC Kuala Lumpur East Course is parkland style, with beautiful vibrant-colored landscaping. This 18-hole championship ground was voted 4th best course in all Malaysia in 2010. The design takes full advantage of the beauty of the land and makes you feel in harmony with nature. It offers natural grasses and wetlands and provides natural habitats to numerous species of wildlife and birds.
Designed to reward the intelligent golfer, the length, layout, and toughness of this course are perfectly balanced. The Kuala Lumpur golf course features impeccably maintained fairways and greens, challenging elevation changes and an environment that enhances the essence of the local terrain.
The East course also has a pleasantly undulating parkland character, with several nicely elevated tee-boxes, providing a good look at the demands ahead. The lightly tree-lined, contoured fairways provide good definition to each hole, some of them requiring driving accuracy.
The opening holes of the back-nine, flanked by OB and condominiums, is where straight-hitting from the tee is at a premium, much more so than on the easier-going front-nine. Good bunkering, clinging rough around the greens and, as your round progresses, ever more frequent and severe water hazards, ensures that the TPC Kuala Lumpur, East Course continually tests and probes your overall game.
The challenging back-nine loop contains a tough closing stretch, with the par-5 16th throwing down one of the sternest tests; played from an elevated tee, water awaits any stray shots to either left or right. At both the par-4 9th and 18th holes, which run in parallel back to the clubhouse, a small lake menacingly guards your approach shots to the respective greens. Overall the East course provides an enjoyable golf outing on an excellent championship layout.
Kota Permai Golf & Country Club.
Set within the township of Kota Kemuning, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club has impressed Malaysia golf visitors since its opening in 1998. The 18-hole Kota Permai championship course designed by top international architect, Ross Watson and is one of the best golf courses in Asia.
Bearing testimony to the top status of Kota Permai Golf & Country Club is its impressive portfolio of professional golf championships. From 1998 to 2002 and once again in 2004, Kota Permai hosted the Asian Tour Volvo Masters. Kota Permai was the venue for qualifying event for the World Cup of Golf in 2007. The next year Kota Permai provided a worthy battleground for the co-sanctioned European Tour Malaysian Open.
With success comes recognition and, over the years, Kota Permai has earned numerous awards including Malaysia Number One Golf Course and Most Beautiful Hole by Golf Malaysia magazine in 2001/2002/2004/2005/2006. And it did not stop there - in Golf Malaysia magazine reader poll 2007/2008, Kota Permai voted the country's Best Golf Course. In 2008, Kota Permai was named as the Best Golf & Country Club of the Year in the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards.
The Kota Permai layout is challenging yet fair, with playing options for all levels of golfers. The design is in harmony with nature and reflected in the wildlife and mature trees found throughout the golf course. The course measures 6,396 meters from the tips and this Kuala Lumpur golf course features a tantalizing mix of straight holes and doglegs, while scenic water hazards and sculptured bunkering add form and challenge to play. To ensure that a round of golf at Kota Permai is always a rewarding experience, the Japanese Zoysia fairways, and undulating Bermuda grass greens are always maintained to the highest standards.
Notable holes include the par-4 second hole. The second is the most beautiful hole on the golf course. With a water hazard stretching along the left of the fairway and snaking to the front of the green, two solid shots are needed to hit the green. Fairway bunkers placed strategically, and the approach landing area on the fairway is blind from the tee box. An added attraction is a large rendition of a squirrel, the course’s logo on the left side of the fairway as you approach the green.
The 408 meters fifteenth par-4 is index two and requires a long and accurate drive as out of bounds and bunkers lurk on the right and a watery grave on the left. The finishing hole is a superb, 517 meter par-5. From the elevated tee box, golfers get by a panoramic view where the magnificent clubhouse provides the backdrop from a distance. Strategically placed bunkers on the fairway and by the green ensure a tough finish to the round.
In 2004, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club completed renovations included greens rebuilding to United States Golf (USGA) specifications, upgrading of tee boxes, adding more vertical railway-sleepers to the bunkers, and expanding the clubhouse. Facilities on offer include two-tier driving range, excellent practice greens for chipping, putting and bunker play, plus a golf academy. Facilities are on par with other world-renowned golf courses.
Glenmarie Golf Club
Glenmarie Golf and Country Club is about a half hour drive from the Kuala Lumpur airport and is one of the main golf courses in the Klang Valley. Glenmarie is regarded as one of the top-10 golf courses in Malaysia, with good conditioning and lovely, ornate landscaping.
It was once the Glenmarie Rubber Estates, where oil palm was produced, but now it is a semi-private Kuala Lumpur golf course with nice facilities, locker rooms, sauna, and on-site golf academy. The old rubber estate makes for excellent golf terrain, with rolling hills and some nice, moderate elevation changes. There are relatively open interiors on the two courses, with fairways bordered by a mix of Malaysian and of course oil palm trees.
Glenmarie is designed by American Max Wexler and features two 18-hole courses, both similar in style, but with contrasting landscapes. The Garden Course at 6,432 meters is a little longer than the Valley Course, which measures 6,325 meters. Golf carts are compulsory while caddies are optional on both courses.
The Garden Course has rich flora and fauna with a diversity of palms and flowering shrubs. A large lake plays home to migrating and local birds. Watch out for the swans, especially the black and white ones swimming on the lake. The Garden Course has undergone a recent renovation of its greens plus several changes to bunkers, tee-boxes, and fairways. The 2010 renovation exercise made the Garden Course more challenging.
Gently sloping down to some small lakes in its lower sections, the almost bowl-like terrain of the Garden Course creates an open feel too. In this relatively free environment, the holes are well-spaced, rarely if ever intruding on each other. The opening two holes on the Garden Course may have you thinking that water will be a constant threat, but don't worry. Only two further holes, the par-4 5th and short, snaking par-5 12th have water seriously in play. Much of the challenge here comes from judging your approach shots into large, fast and undulating greens while staying out of quite deep and abundant greenside bunkers.
The Valley Course features hundreds of pine trees on a narrow course with spectacular views in a parkland setting. Water comes into play and sprawls over the hills on the Valley Course which enhances its beauty. Most holes on the constantly undulating Valley Course are arranged on either side of a picturesque man-made lake, in an area which winds its way along the valley floor.
You may think that will make for a watery round, but water only comes dangerously into play on about five or six holes. The par-5 4th presents the most significant water challenge, with a creek to avoid from your tee-shot and an island green to hit before you get the chance to putt-out. This hole, together with the 3rd and 5th play on the other side of the expressway. Rather than the presence of water, it is more likely that the elevation changes will challenge newcomers, especially with a few narrow fairways and some blind tee and approach shots to make.
