Survival Guide: Top 10 Tips For Travelling To Malaysia
1. Learn the local language
Not all locals speak the same language as travellers from around the world. Although most of them speak in English. In rural areas, locals can say simple phrases like ‘How are you?’ and ‘Thank you’. To communicate better with them, try to learn to say basic words in Malay, Chinese, and Tamil. You could also use body language (and a smile) so they understand what you are trying to say. They will appreciate that you did your best to talk to them. Some of them might become your friends and would be willing to share their stories with you.
2. Join local communities before arriving
There are many travel enthusiasts and locals who share their love for Malaysian culture through events and programmes. We recommend looking at hostels that organise special programmes such as food tours, city tours, hiking, night life, and many other fun activities. Couchsurfing is also another great option to befriend locals to show you around and experience great fun, Malaysian style. If you are into arts and culture, we recommend engaging on the social media pages of local art markets and galleries such as Riuh in The City, Zhongshan Building, The Bee and Publika.
3. Know duty-free rules
Malaysia is serious about duty-free concession. There is a limit for buying certain items. Wine, spirits or malt liquor cannot exceed one litre per person. While only 200 cigarettes can be brought into Malaysia. Perfumes and cosmetics cannot cost more than RM200 (USD50). Travellers are required to go to the Red Lane to declare their goods. If they have nothing to declare, they can move on to the Green Lane.

4. No drugs allowed
Taking drugs into Malaysia is a serious offence, regardless of quantity. The punishment for these cases will be high fines and jail time. Before travelling, make sure to double check your luggage and bags to be sure there are no questionable substances that may appear among your belongings.
5. Be adventurous in trying hawker stalls
Hawker stalls can look hot and stuffy due to thick crowds, but the local delicacies may just be worth it. Authentic local food is prepared and cooked at stalls before serving. Try as many local dishes as you want because these are more affordable than fancy restaurants. A single dish costs about RM7 – 10 (around USD1 – 2). You can even order huge dishes to share with your friends, which are even cheaper. Most of the hawker stalls are kept clean so you can enjoy your meal at the tables or along the streets.
Malaysia offers lovely tropical weather, with temperatures roughly between 28 – 31ºC. The weather can be extremely hot on certain days, though, and more humid on rainy and sunny days. Have back-up plans to enjoy indoor activities to avoid sweating under the sun or getting soaked from the rain. Spend your time in malls, browsing through the stores and enjoying your meals at lovely cafes. Be sure to put on some sun screen and drink plenty of water as well.
7. Avoid the haze
The severity of haze in Malaysia changes on a yearly basis. In 2015, alongside Singapore and Thailand, Malaysia suffered a month-long haze due to mass illegal burning of forests in Indonesia. Last year, the haze blanketed Malaysian skies for a few days. It is advisable to monitor the conditions before travelling.
Public transport has become more convenient for visitors travelling around Malaysia. There are many lines – including the LRT, MRT and Monorail – to be used to go out and about in Kuala Lumpur. Also, you can still hop onto buses to get to your destinations. Charging by the distance starts at 80 cents. In other states of Malaysia like Penang, Melaka and Ipoh, you can move around via public buses. To save on travelling costs, it would be best to walk around. Although you might want to avoid walking in the afternoons to prevent heat strokes. Map out public transportation routes to your destination before heading out.
There is no tipping in Malaysia. Many cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars charge a 10% service charge and 6% Goods and Services Tax on top of your bill. These are mentioned on the menu. You cannot give extra tips to taxi drivers and hotels as you only need to pay the exact amount. If they provide you great service, ask them before giving tips.
10. Prepare equipment for hiking in rainforests and mountains
Malaysia has plenty of stunning tropical rainforests and mountains. Appropriate clothing is recommended in order to enjoy your adventures here. Wear comfortable sports or hiking shoes. Take insect repellent with you and bring some healthy snacks in case you get hungry along the way. Most importantly, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

SUNGAI LONG COUNTRY CLUB
Officially opened in 1992 and just 15 minutes drive from downtown Kuala Lumpur, Sungai Long Country Club was the first Jack Nicklaus designed course in Malaysia. The course underwent major renovations in 2013 including the upgrading of the greens to TifEagle Bermuda grass, as well as improved drainage and irrigation to enhance the turf conditions of this magnificent design.
The course features strategically placed bunkering, immaculately groomed greens and fairways with generous landing areas and meticulous landscaping throughout. Sungai Long Country Club is consistently ranked amongst the top 15 courses in the country and is a must play in visiting Kuala Lumpur
Palm Garden Golf Club
Part of the IOI Resort, Palm Garden is a 30-minute drive from the Kuala Lumpur city center. The club embarked on a major exercise in 2009 which saw the emergence of 18 new holes designed by talented course architect Ted Parslow.
The Course is sand-capped, and golfers will find there are a lot of undulations, mounds, and swales. A lot of natural boulders and rocks that were dug up were reused to add to the aesthetics of the design. When one plays here, they will feel that they are playing in another country.
On-site facilities include chipping and putting greens, grass driving range, and well-stocked pro shop and locker rooms.
Palm Garden Golf Club offers excellent value-for-money as it is hard to find such a high-quality Kuala Lumpur golf course for the price. This Malaysia golf course has proper course maintenance, easy accessibility, ample tee times, and fun experience for all level of golfers.
Penang Golf Club
Located near the airport on once a 130-acre hilly rugged and rocky jungle, the Penang Golf Club (former Bukit Jambul Country Club) has established itself as one of Malaysia top golf clubs right from the opening in 1984. Thereafter, course upgrades and renovations have enabled Penang Golf Club to keep its leadership position among Penang golf courses. In fact, Penang Golf Club was the venue for the 31st Malaysian Open in 1992 which was won by Vijay Singh. That same year the Penang golf club was rated at the 6th best in Malaysia and since then many other events and professional golfers have graced the Penang Golf Club fairways.
Penang Golf Club provides a stunning panoramic view of the island, with the impressive Penang Bridge and mainland Malaysia in the distance. Villas, apartment blocks and the huge Equatorial Hotel provide most of the backdrop to this very tight and often dramatically undulating, parkland golf course. Although surrounded by the sights and sounds of the city, there are also enough jungle clad hills around to remind you that Penang Island is lush and tropical, much favored by holiday-makers and beach-goers.
The 18 hole 5,763 meter, par-72 golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is fairly compact. Around the often smallish greens, Trent Jones has chosen to hide many of the bunkers, giving them grassy faces that blend into the fairways and semi-rough.
The Penang Golf Club layout favors accuracy instead of distance off the tee. The sharply doglegging, dramatically downhill opening par-4, provides a clear signal of the tightness of things to come, while also highlighting the excellent presentation and maintenance standards you'll find here. By the time you reach the super-tight par-4 4th, you'll either have the measure of the course, or it will have the measure of you.
Bukit Jawi Golf Resort
Bukit Jawi Golf Resort on Peninsula Malaysia is about a 45 minute drive from Penang International Airport. The 36-hole Penang golf resort is set in a lush tropical landscape and was built on a former hilly oil palm plantation and around large bodies of contoured lakes. Bukit Jawi is 20 kilometers from Penang Island and consistently ranks among the 20 best golf resorts in Malaysia.
Bukit Jawi is a scenic course and the surrounding countryside from almost every tee. Laid out on pleasantly and continually undulating terrain, Bukit Jawi boasts two excellent, challenging and very absorbing championship layouts. The Hill Course and Lake Course offer golfers of varying handicaps a challenging and rewarding experience through with carefully landscaped greens and strategically placed hazards. The fairways and tee boxes grassed with Japanese Zoysia and the putting surfaces turfed with fast-rolling Bermuda grass.
The longer Hill Course, at 6,385 meters, is an 18-hole par-72 championship course. The course long and undulating fairways coupled with strategically placed hazards present a challenge to every aspect of the golfer game from stroke accuracy and distance to course management. The Hill Course will encourage big-hitters with its usually good-width fairways, even if six or seven of them require blind, uphill drives from the tee. Good bunkering and a line of palms and other tree varieties, ensure every fairway benefits from the definition.
