The weather of the Mekong Delta area

Similar to other areas in Southern Vietnam, the weather of the Mekong Delta is very stable with two seasons. The average temperature is 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year. And the temperature doesn’t change much between day and night. In the rainy season, there are rains but it doesn’t last long. So it is not the perfect weather to visit the Mekong Delta, but it won’t affect your trip too much either. When it pours, you just need to stop somewhere for about 10-15 minutes and then continue what you were doing. However, the best time for visiting is between November and January because the water level is at its highest throughout the year. These months are also dry months so there are many exciting activities you can experience.

Besides, the dry season lasts from November to April so anytime during this period is a good time to visit the Mekong Delta. These months have comfortable weather and low rainfall, so you can ride a bike exploring the countryside area, experience daily life here. Also, you can enjoy Vietnamese tropical fruits as this is harvest season.

• Rainy Season in Mekong Delta

The rainy season is from May to October. At this time, you will see the rain almost every day. Also, rain in the area changes unexpectedly. Sometimes, it is just a soft rain or it pours but lasts for a few minutes. But other times, it becomes dark and the rain is heavy, which lasts half of a day.

Because it rains almost every day, a flood will occur in the Mekong Delta after a few months. Thanks to the flood season, water from small and big rivers can flow into the paddy fields to provide abundant nutrients for rice. And because of the high level of water, the floating market will be beautiful to visit.

If your trip happens to be in the rainy season, you might not want to ride a bike around the bridge because of strong wind and heavy rains. In fact, if it rains heavily all day, do not go out. Instead, if it is light rain, your trip won’t be affected too much.

Rainy Season in Mekong Delta

It is necessary to bring a raincoat or umbrella whenever you go out in the rainy season. Also, you need a hat to protect you from strong sunshine and light clothes to keep you cool from hot temperatures.
Another important item is the sunscreen. Rainy season doesn’t mean there is no sun. Instead, when there is no rain, sunshine is really strong. So you have to protect your skin from UV light. You also need to be careful with mosquitoes because the rainy season is when mosquitoes are produced.

• Dry Season in Mekong Delta

The dry season is from November to April. This is the best time to visit the Mekong Delta as it rarely rains at this time of the year. The dry season only has about five to ten percent of the total rainfall in a year.

In general, the weather in the dry season is hot, except for December and January when it is cooler and more comfortable for tourists who are not into the heat. This time is excellent for outdoor activities, such as walking around the area and taking photos, cycling or riding around the villages, enjoying sweet fruits from the garden, catching fish in the canal, visiting noodle factories.

Coming here this time, you should bring a hat and light clothes because of the hot and humid weather. Also, because there is no rain, you can wear sneakers, sandals, or flip flops so that it is easier for a walk.

Similar to the rainy season, sunscreen and mosquito repellent are important items. In addition to protecting your skin from the sun and heat, you need to keep your body from being dehydrated due to the hot and humid weather. So you need to bring a bottle of water with you every time you go out. Or you can buy it from a convenience store which is cheap. Besides, you can replace water with cane sugar juice, smoothies, or juices. And avoid doing many activities at noon or take a rest while you do anything.

Dry season in Mekong Delta

The dry season is also the time for Lunar New Year in Vietnam which is called Tet. So if you come here late January or early February, you will see all the decorations for Tet. As this is the most important holiday in Vietnam, you can see flowers, cakes, jams everywhere on the streets and markets, grocery stores. You will also have a chance to enjoy traditional Vietnamese food in the South, such as pickled mini leeks and Vietnamese cylindrical sticky rice cake. There are a lot of parties and karaoke times as everyone is happy and relaxed during the holiday.
