Visa: In Indonesia, 169 countries can now obtain a visa on arrival. This is valid for 30 days but cannot be renewed or extended. If you wish to stay in Indonesia for longer, you can pay for a tourist visa (there is a special line in the immigration customs for it). This gives you 30 days plus a chance to extend it for another 30 days through any immigration office. If you want to stay for longer, it is also possible to get a social visa which gives you around 6 months.
Safety: Although violent crime is fairly rare, there is a lot of petty theft, especially in touristy areas like Bali. With that being said, as long as you are sensible with your belongings (always put your bag strap across your body), never leaving your things unattended, you will be fine. ATM skimming is also pretty common so whatever you do, make sure you only go to ATM machines that are directly connected to a bank or to go to machines which have surveillance systems pointing at the machines at all times.
Based on our years of experience of traveling all over the world, we would never leave home without travel insurance. We recommend going with World Nomads due to their great travel activities coverage. For those who are only traveling month on month, Safety Wing can also be a good alternative as they offer renewable monthly insurance plans.
Apart from petty theft, alcohol poisoning is another serious issue that Bali and the popular Gili Islands is facing. Due to heavy alcohol import tax, some local vendors opt to stretch out their supply with other chemicals so it’s best to stay away from the local arak and only buy drinks from reputable bars and restaurants. Chances are, if you find a beach bar offering ridiculously low cocktails, the local alcohol might be mixed with extenders.
Indonesia also has a zero-tolerance for drugs, with the death penalty being imposed on a few convicted criminals so never put yourself at risk by carrying packages for people or even going to parties where you know drugs would be present just to be on the safe side.
Language: Everywhere you go in Bali, you will easily be able to find people who speak English, especially in touristy areas like Canggu, Ubud, and Seminyak. However, the further you decide to go, the level of English lowers. With that being said, no matter where you go, the people who work in the tourism and hospitality industry always has a good understanding of the language. The local language is called Bahasa and is spoken and understood widely despite the fact that they have about 300 native dialects.
As mentioned, although English is widely spoken, it doesn’t hurt to learn a few words to help you out.
Good Morning: Selamat Pagi Yes: La No: Tidak Thank you: Terimah Kasih To eat: Makan Spicy: Pedas No Spicy: Tidak pedas Vegetables only (for vegetarians): Sayur saja Cool: Bagus
Festivals and Celebrations: When traveling around Indonesia, watch out for the end Ramadan (July) as a lot of stores and restaurants are closed during these periods. During this time, making bookings for both accommodation and transportation is recommended. Other big celebrations worth seeing are Nyepi, which is the Balinese New Year celebrated in March.
Transportation: Transportation is a bit of a mission in Indonesia as it is pretty spread apart. To get from one place to the next, we recommend downloading the Skyscanner App to help you find cheap deals. When we were there, we got cheap flights from Bali to Sumatra thanks to the Skyscanner App.
We recommend using Bookaway or 12Go website to view bus, boat, and train schedules ahead of time. We’ve used these websites all over Asia and it saves us the hassle of lining up in travel agencies or bus stations. This saves you a lot of time as trying to sort out tickets using a travel agent is a pain! In Bali, I suggest downloading the Blue Bird Taxi App to help you get around from one place to the next. Grab unfortunately is frowned upon by the local taxi drivers so you have to be discreet when using it.

A Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright designed Hawaiian-styled golf course, Bali National Golf Club re-opened in 2013 after undergoing extensive renovations. Being located at the southern tip of the island puts Bali National near many of the top hotels. It is only a short 15-minute drive by new 4-lane tollway from the Bali International Airport.
The Bali golf course now features new Paspalum turf, with scalloped bunkering lining most fairways and elevated greens. Many of the newly routed holes have lengthened to championship distances as the course now plays to over 7100 yards from the tips.
In its previous incarnation, Bali Nation hosted the 1994 Asian Dunhill Masters where Nick Faldo shot the course record 63, and in 1997 the Bali golf club was voted one of Asia top 5 golf courses by Fortune Magazine.
Two distinct terrains have been used to create Bali National. The outward nine plays up through the hills with lush tropical and jungle fauna. Spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and the Nusa Dua area show up on practically every hole. Hand-built local stone walls have been incorporated into the golf course design to terrace the sides of fairways and tee boxes. The wall arrangments give one the impression of being in the typical rice field terraces that characterize the Bali countryside. The longest hole is the par-5 7th playing over 600 yards. Watch out for some unusual terraced landscaping hazards that might inspire a kind of longing for an old bunker.
The inward nine at Bali National plays on level land through coconut trees and a series of man-made lakes. Hole 17, one of the signature holes, is Bali answer to the famous TPCC Sawgrass 17. The dangerous par-3 played to an island green requires a well-struck tee shot to avoid a watery beginning. The final hole is an excellent dogleg left which sets up for good birdie possibilities with spectators viewing the finish from the modern clubhouse.
New Kuta Golf
Located on Bali southern shore in the Pecatu compound at Dreamland Beach is one of Bali most spectacular golf courses; New Kuta Golf. Carved out of harsh limestone between the brilliant white cliffs and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean, New Kuta Golf ranks among Asia most spectacular.
New Kuta was awarded as the Best New International Course by Links Magazine 2008 and 10th Best Course in Indonesia by Golf Digest in 2009. That same year the Asian Tour Indonesian Open was held at New Kuta.
The Bali New Kuta golf course surrounds include breathtaking sea views with waves crashing at the base of many of the holes. The landscape comprises rolling links-styled fairway, semi-rough of natural grasses and sand and undulated greens. From its five sets of tees, New Kuta Golf Club plays various distances challenging players from beginners to low handicappers.
The outward nine ventures inland and plays over varied terrain. At the 191-yard 6th hole, the flamboyant putting surface - multi-tiered and angled away from the tee - is literally surrounded by a sea of sand. It an island green essentially, encircled by an uninterrupted bunker of uncommon depth. The extreme bunker depth places a premium on accuracy; miss anywhere, and par is a chore. At the par-4 7th, a beautiful-but-brutish dogleg right, sheer length (470 yards) combines with a well-bunkered landing area and an elevated green guarded by a phalanx of hillside bunkers.
Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club
Located on the most southern coastline of Bali along dramatic cliffs rising from the Indian Ocean, Bukit Pandawa is an 18-hole executive par-3 golf course. The JMP Golf designed course is next to the scenic beaches on the Bukit peninsula. Built on top of the limestone landscape, Bukit Pandawa Golf Club weaves its way from elevated ridges to ocean cliff edges and features spectacular views over the Indian Ocean.
The course centrally located amongst 5-star hotels that include Mandarin Oriental, Raffles, Fairmont and Waldorf Astoria. The golf course collection of intricate greens complexes, rock outcroppings, rustic architectural ruins and a natural landscape theme. Wall-to-wall Seashore Paspalum grass ensures excellent year round playing conditions.
